Sensory Explorers is intentionally built to meet the social-emotional and developmental needs of children with developmental disabilities.
Sensory Explorers is an out-of-school-time program for youth with developmental disabilities. This non-clinical enrichment program offers one hour of structured, inclusive recreational programming per week, with 30 minutes of physical activity and 30 minutes of creative exploration (e.g., STEAM, arts and crafts). Each session will run for eight weeks.
Each weekly class will be one hour long, balancing 30 minutes of physical activity with 30 minutes of creative enrichment such as STEAM, arts, or crafts.
Sensory Explorers is held at the Elizabeth Branch, centrally located in downtown Elizabeth. The branch includes on-site parking and ADA-accessible facilities.
Sensory Explorers is intentionally built to meet the social-emotional and developmental needs of children with developmental disabilities.
Curriculum design is rooted in the Creative Curriculum, which is used throughout all of our YMCA child care program. Creative Curriculum is research-based, inclusive and flexible.
Sensory Explorers will integrate core components of our child development philosophy, including STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), HEPA (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity—excluding snacks), and SEL (Social-Emotional Learning).
For each youth participant, a parent must remain at the program site during the program.
Families will be expected to attend a pre-program orientation.
