Alfonse has been a member of The Gateway Family YMCA for 23 years! If you’ve spent any amount of time at the Rahway Branch, you’ve probably met this very active member.

While Alfonse enjoys his visits to the Y and participates in swimming and strength training exercises, he enjoys the flexibility of his membership, “I can change the times I go according to the events schedule.”

His current wellness goal includes, “Continuing to keep my weight in check.”

Alfonse proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Weapons Platoon, at Headquarters and in a Service Company—attached to Kilo Company. Alfonse completed his tour in Vietnam at the age of 19 in 1969! His rank was E3 Lance Corporal.

During his tour of duty, his responsibilities included assigning weapons and supplies to the companies. “While I was attached to Kilo Company, President Johnson’s son-in-law was with one of the companies and I have a picture of him walking past us.”

Alfonse also has had some more local adventures, back home in the United States, “After 1970, I hitchhiked more that 7,500 miles back and forth across the United States. I stayed in San Francisco for a few winters in 1971 and 1972.” He has also written a memoir of his time in “Nam”.

Alfonse also enjoys cycling and added, “I put over 2,000 miles on a 10 speed bike; using it for everything except shopping.”

Alfonse continued his spirit of service into his professional career, becoming a Corrections Officer here in New Jersey. Alfonse retired as a Corrections Officer in 2013 and continues to utilize his YMCA membership to stay in shape, remain connected to friends and give back to the community.

We thank Alfonse for his service to his country and are proud to call him a member!
