Early Learning Readiness
Miranda & Teddy's Story
The Early Learning Readiness (ELR) program at The Gateway Family YMCA supports preschool children and their caregivers with the overall goal of helping children develop the cognitive, physical and social skills needed to be school ready. Each caregiver is provided an understanding of their role in early child development, skill enhancement, brain development and school readiness.

Miranda and Teddy began their ELR experience in December 2017, after searching online for a program and discovering the ELR program on the YMCA website at tgfymca.org.

“Before coming here, he was barely speaking more than a few words at age two and a half. Within the past two months of attending these classes, his language skills have blossomed as well as his social skills,” stated Miranda. “Additionally, being new to the challenges of guiding a spirited two and a half year old, the teachers expertise has afforded us an opportunity to be guided to healthier and more effective ways to assist Teddy with his development. Her knowledge base, guidance, kindness and support have been invaluable. It has truly opened my eyes to a whole new level of childcare that I was unaware of. As we move forward, we will always remember the wonderful foundation this class has given to Theodore.”

During the ELR program Teddy is encouraged to interact with other children as well as other adults. Children take turns at each center. Opportunities to practice patience and sharing are a big part of the program as children are exposed to real-life situations to practice for school.

Miranda is a positive contributor to the program through her active engagement with Teddy and her understanding of what our program offers, encouraging other parents to become involved and educated.

The Early Learning Readiness program is offered in Elizabeth and Rahway in both English and Spanish. Classes continue from September to June.
