March 26, 2013 Diabetes Alert Day

Diabetes is a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and nerve disease. Almost 26 million Americans have diabetes and about 79 million adults in the United States have prediabetes. People with prediabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years unless they take steps to prevent or delay the disease. The GOOD News is lifestyle changes started NOW can help delay or prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.

March 2013 - Healthy U Tip of the Month

In 2008, The Horizon Foundation of New Jersey and the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance partnered in the development of Healthy U - a program at preventing childhood obesity through improved nutrition, increased physical activity and parental involvement. Today, the program is implemented in all 21 counties throughout New Jersey, reaching more than 40,000 children ages 3-13 at 480 Y locations and 50 public elementary school partners.

February 27, 2013 - YMCA Community Forum Addressing the Diabetes Epidemic

Several YMCA's in New Jersey are collaborating with United Healthcare to bring together a cross-section of clinical and community leaders to raise awareness of issues surrrounding the Type 2 Diabetes Epidemic and provide community-based solutions to prevent the disease. The Forum will include a panel discussion among notable health care leaders in both the public and private sector.

In February 2012, Jonathan Lever, Y-USA's Vice President of Healthy Living, hosted a Healthy Living Strategy at Your Y webinar which has prompted new ways of working in Eastern Union County. The YMCA of Eastern Union County recognized the opportunity to re-energize their relationship-based culture and support of the health and well-being of everyone in their community— work that began under Activate America.

Member Appreciation Day!

All 3 branches of the YMCA of Eastern Union County (Rahway, Union, and Elizabeth) celebrated Member Appreciation Day on Tuesday, December 11 and it was an all around great success! Each branch had fun activities planned throughout the day and hosted a member potluck lunch for members and staff to socialize, exchange recipes, and get in the holiday spirit!

SHOWING SUPPORT HONORING OTHERS

The Township of Union Education Foundation in cooperation with the Township of Union Public Schools created a "Walkway of Honor" to provide an opportunity to honor graduates, memorialize loved ones, promote a business, recognize a staff member, or otherwise show support. All funds raised support the Township of Union Education Foundations. The YMCA of Eastern Union County was honored to support “Walkway of Honor” at Union High School by sponsoring two engraved bricks.
