April 27 - YMCA Healthy Kids Day

Healthy Kids Day is the Y's national initiative to improve the health and well-being of families and to help them get a jump on creating a healthier summer for their kids. Summer is the time for kids to get up, get out and grow. Quality activities and resources during the summer months help children learn, grow and achieve their potential.

April 10 - Free Health Screening for Diabetes

Almost 26 million Americans have diabetes and another 79 million adults have prediabetes. People with prediabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years, unless they take steps to prevent or delay the disease. Most importantly, most people with prediabetes are unaware. Take your first step and participate within a simple, quick screening on April 10. The screening will be lead by staff from the Overlook Medical Center.

April 2013 Healthy U Tip of the Month

Healthy U uses the CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) curriculum in our preschool and afterschool settings. Healthy U is a program aimed at preventing childhood obesity through improved nutrition, increased physical activity, and parental involvement.

Diabetes is a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and nerve disease. In 2008, The Horizon Foundation of New Jersey and the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance partnered in the development of Healthy U - a program at preventing childhood obesity through improved nutrition, increased physical activity and parental involvement. Today, the program is implemented in all 21 counties throughout New Jersey, reaching more than 40,000 children ages 3-13 at 480 Y locations and 50 public elementary school partners.

February 27, 2013 - YMCA Community Forum Addressing the Diabetes Epidemic

Several YMCA's in New Jersey are collaborating with United Healthcare to bring together a cross-section of clinical and community leaders to raise awareness of issues surrrounding the Type 2 Diabetes Epidemic and provide community-based solutions to prevent the disease. The Forum will include a panel discussion among notable health care leaders in both the public and private sector.
